What a Difference a Day Makes: Encouragement for the Waiting Heart

Have you ever quietly wondered, When is that thing I’m praying for finally going to happen?

I was recently talking to my friend, Traci, about this very thing. I told her I sometimes wonder when God would come through on certain things, or when the next season of my life would to start. Not because I’m ungrateful for the one I’m in, but because there are lots of things I’m still waiting on God to do.

So let me ask you something: What are you waiting on to happen next?

  • Are you waiting for a new job?
  • Waiting for love?
  • Waiting for healing?
  • Waiting for your finances to shift?
  • Waiting for housing?
  • Waiting for peace?

Take a minute and think of one to three things you’ve been praying for/waiting on then read on.

What a Difference a Day Can Make

After I shared what I was feeling, she recommended that I go listen to the song “What a Difference a Day Makes.”

Now, to be clear, the song does have a romantic undertone. However, her point wasn’t really about romance.

Her point was this:

Sometimes, whatever you’re waiting for is just one day away, and you don’t even know it.

That stayed with me.

When God moves suddenly

One day can truly change everything.

Think about Joseph.

One day, he was in prison. The next day he was becoming the prime minister of Egypt.

Think about David.

One day he was running from Saul. The next day the “fugitive” had become the king.

Think about the Israelites.

One day, they were enslaved in Egypt. The next day they were crossing the Red Sea on their way to the Promised Land.

Think about Sarah.

One day she was barren. The next day she was pregnant.

On and on it goes.

Sometimes, whatever you’re waiting for is just one day away, and you don’t even know it. #forsinglewomenonly Share on X

One day, things looked impossible.

The next day, God made the impossible possible.

What you need to remember

The beginning of the song says,

What a difference a day makes
24 little hours
Brought the sun and the flowers
Where there used to be rain
…”

Sis, you can be in the middle of what feels ordinary, delayed, or even disappointing, and have no idea that God is already preparing the next chapter.

You can go to sleep thinking nothing has changed, and wake up to a phone call, an opportunity, a conversation, a divine connection, a breakthrough, or a shift you never saw coming.

Time to do a little experiment…

Think about a holiday. Let’s use July 4th as an example.

Now imagine you had no clock, no calendar, no smart watch, no phone, no planner, and zero way of checking the date.

  • You know July 4th exists.
  • You know it’s coming.
  • You just don’t know exactly when.

What would you do?

Would you drive yourself crazy every day asking, Is it July 4th yet? Is it tomorrow? Is it next week? Did I miss it? Why hasn’t it come? What if it never comes??!!

Or

Would you keep living your life while staying open to the signs?

  • Maybe you’d notice red, white, and blue decorations going up around the neighborhood.
  • Maybe you’d see fireworks stands on the side of the road.
  • Maybe the cookout invitations would start rolling in.
  • Maybe the stores would be filled with flags, paper plates, and patriotic displays.

And if you live in the South, the weather would definitely be giving you clues too. As the comedian Anjelah Johnson put it, in the South there are two seasons: summer and fire. And July 4th is in the fire season.

Even though you may not know the exact date, the signs would begin to tell you that Independence Day is around the corner.

You can be in the middle of what feels ordinary, delayed, or even disappointing, and have no idea that God is already preparing the next chapter. #forsinglewomenonly Share on X

And here’s the thing: even if you didn’t know when July 4th would arrive, July 4th would still come.

  • Your awareness of the date wouldn’t control the date.
  • Your anxiety about the date wouldn’t speed it up.
  • Your obsessing over the date wouldn’t make it arrive sooner.

It would come at its appointed time.

Your “Independence Day” Has a Date Too

Whatever you’re waiting for is a little like that.

  • Your “July 4th” might be healing.
  • It might be marriage.
  • It might be direction.
  • It might be a new job.
  • It might be the right opportunity.
  • It might be the restoration of your peace/joy.
  • It might be the day you finally understand why God had you wait or why things had to be so hard for you.

But only God knows the date.

And I know that can be frustrating because you may want details.

You may want to know whether you’re going to be waiting weeks, months, or years. You may want God to send a tracking number so you can see exactly where your answered prayer is and when it will arrive.

But God doesn’t always give us the date. Instead, He simply asks you and I to trust Him.

Don’t Forget This

The hard truth is this: hyper-focusing on when it will happen will not make it happen any sooner.

It may only make you more anxious, more discouraged, and more tempted to believe that God has forgotten you.

But He has not forgotten you.

Jesus said, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33, NLT.

That doesn’t mean you stop desiring or praying for good things. It means you put God first while trusting Him with the timing of everything else.

It means you keep becoming the woman He called you to be.

It means you keep living, not just waiting.

It means you stop magnifying the unanswered prayers and stop minimizing the blessings you have. You can pray for what you want but still practice gratitude and contentment.

You Could Be One Day Away

Here’s what I want you to hold onto:

Whatever you’re waiting on could happen in the next 24 hours.

The call could come. The door could open. The answer could arrive. The shift could happen. The relationship could begin. The clarity could come. The opportunity could appear.

But even if it doesn’t happen in the next 24 hours, you are still one day closer than you were yesterday.

Every day that passes is not proof that God is late. It means you are one day closer to the date only God can see.

So don’t spend your whole life staring at the calendar of heaven, trying to figure out when God is going to do what only God can do.

  • Live.
  • Pray.
  • Prepare.
  • Laugh.
  • Serve.
  • Rest.
  • Grow.

Pay attention to what God is doing in you, not just what you want Him to do for you.

And when the waiting feels long, remind yourself: one day really can make a difference.

So don’t spend your whole life staring at the calendar of heaven, trying to figure out when God is going to do what only God can do. Pay attention to what God is doing in you, not just what you want Him to do for you.… Share on X

What are 1-3 things you’re waiting on God to do in your life? Write them down. Pray over them. Then ask yourself: How can I keep living faithfully while I wait? And if this encouraged you, share it with a friend. Who knows what a difference a day may make in her life…
